"Global Mining Summit(GMS) is the signature initiative being organized concurrently with the International Mining Machinery Exhibition. Over the years this flagship event of the CII National Mining Committee has emerged as the forum to be for the mining leaders to congregate both internationally and from India. It brings together the government policy makers, mining professionals, technology providers, financing institutions, academia, geologists, environmentalists and consultants to deliberate of the emerging issues and challenges being faced by the sector. This cross pollination of ideas leads to the evolution of a shared agenda that is pursued with the stakeholders by the committee.

An exclusive report on the Mining sector opportunities is expected to be unveiled by Mr. Piyush Goyal, Minister of State for Power, Coal, New & Renewable Energy and Mines. The report would capture the emerging landscape for the sector covering issues like Economic benefits of mining in maintaining the country's strategic balance sheet , Improving the Exploration pipeline , Implementation of MMDR & suggestions for making it more industry friendly, Creating a transparent fiscal regime for the extractative industry in the country, Recommendations.

Jon G. Baird
Principal SEMP Consulting, Canada
Speaker: Jon G. Baird, B.Sc., P.Eng., Former President of the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) and former Managing Director of the Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Services for Export (CAMESE) and presently Principal, SEMP Consulting, Canada.
The mineral exploration and mining sector in Canada is beginning to awaken from the globally depressed commodities cycle and low availability of capital for exploration and mine development over the last 3 - 4 years.
Canada has weathered this low period comparatively well, with strong production figures for most key commodities and with a consolidated junior mining sector that remains the biggest and best in the world.
The mining supply community has continued its unrelenting progress in developing new technologies for exploration, extraction, processing and environmental protection. Many of these technologies facilitate better quality outcomes, but have been driven by the industry's strong need to reduce costs.
Canada's new discoveries and developments involve diamonds, gold, lithium, graphite and other commodities.
As a place to invest in the mineral industries, Canada possesses a huge landmass with favourable geology, world-leading, stable political environments for mining, the world's largest market for raising debt and equity capital for mining, as well as unparalleled, cost-efficientexpertise in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, core drilling and other technologies needed to find, develop and operate mines in productive, safe and environmentally sound ways.

Prior to assuming this coveted yet onerous responsibility he served the Telangana based Singareni Collieries Company Limited, in similar capacity.
A Physics Honours Graduate from Presidency College, Kolkata, Mr. Bhattacharya since his entry into the Indian Administration Service has held many important positions and garnered wide array of experience across diversified government sectors. He has been associated with promotion of Research & Development activities, conceptualization of technology and international market promotion of eco-friendly products.
Mr. Bhattacharya took the reins of Coal India Limited, the single largest coal producing company in the world, at a time, when things were delicately poised. The immediate priority was to ramp up the coal production andincrease coal supplies, especially to coal fired power utilities of the country, both of which he pursued assiduously. As a result, the production and off-take during the last two years have reached a never-witnessed-before high orbit growth. It is reflected in the fact that, today, not a single coal based power plant in the country is suffering from want of coal.
A modest person by nature, Mr. Bhattacharya shies away from speaking about his achievementspointing out'the facts and numbers should speak for themselves'. He attributes the success of the company to collective endeavour of his colleagues across all levels.
In Coal India, he is conscientiously advocating quest for quality. That is,increased 'Quantity' with assured 'Quality' in a responsive manner. He has made it a point thatrequisite quantity should be supplied with reliable quality to customers. Mr. Bhattacharya is of the conviction that if brand Coal India has to capture Nation's imagination it can only happen when the company's customer becomes its brand ambassador. His endeavor is for mostfriendly business process interface, constantly innovating on ease of doing business and enhancement of ethical practices.
Another topic that is close to Mr. Bhattacharya's heart is ICT- Information, Communication and Technology which is being leveraged at various levels across the company.
As a professional Mr. Bhattacharya's experience of close association with power sector - in generation of power as well as its transmission - makes him well conversant in understanding the dynamics between power and coal sectors.
As a person, Mr. Bhattacharya is fond of books and is well read. He has been an avid table tennis player during his university days. He also has a penchant for classic movies and he can profusely quote from Gurdev Rabindranath Tagore's writings.
